&lt;p&gt;Sur la base des comp&#233;tences r&#233;elles des membres du Labex et des tendances actuelles dans le domaine des mat&#233;riaux, le programme de recherche propos&#233; sera toujours bas&#233; sur l'&#233;tude des mat&#233;riaux fonctionnels et structurels, des dispositifs photoniques et du d&#233;veloppement de proc&#233;d&#233;s (non consid&#233;r&#233;s explicitement comme un axe de recherche dans le projet pr&#233;c&#233;dent, mais pr&#233;sents dans de nombreux projets). Il sera structur&#233; autour de quatre th&#232;mes de recherche , un axe transverse sur le num&#233;riques et une plateforme exp&#233;rimentales regroupant l'ensemble des moyens accessibles concernant d'une part la caract&#233;risation et les voies de traitement et d'autre part la mod&#233;lisation des proc&#233;d&#233;s et des mat&#233;riaux. Il int&#232;gre certains th&#232;mes de recherche &#233;mergents, qui n'ont pas encore &#233;t&#233; soutenus par le Labex comme l'&#233;laboration et l'&#233;tude des m&#233;tamat&#233;riaux et des r&#233;seaux de guides d'ondes, les mat&#233;riaux 2D, les mat&#233;riaux h&#233;t&#233;rog&#232;nes gradu&#233;s (HGMs), les mat&#233;riaux hybrides et les nanostructures pour diverses applications, l'investigation exp&#233;rimentale et num&#233;rique des mat&#233;riaux composites &#034;intelligents&#034; et l'utilisation du plasma pour le traitement de surface ou le stockage de l'hydrog&#232;ne. Les grandes lignes du projet sont pr&#233;sent&#233;es dans le tableau ci-dessous.&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;

Some unique features of the Labex are: the existence of a large network of industrial companies that shows a strong interest for the project a multidisciplinary approach combined to a multi-scale approach (from nano to macro). One of the strengths of the SEAM project is indeed due to the close and unique industrial-academic relationship that is being established with a new industrial centre that is being constructed today in the north of Paris, at Le Bourget. Engineers from EADS and Eurocopter will be implanted at Le Bourget in the near future and will work with academic researchers.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Structural materials will be first concerned, and rapidly the collaboration will be extended to functional materials. Besides this Centre, Centres of competitivity such as ASTech, Mov'eo or Systematics also located in the Paris region, and drain industrial partners. Some of them are already or will be collaborating with the SEAM researchers (Saint Gobain, Thal&#232;s, DGA, Alstom, ...). Another unique feature and strength of the SEAM labex is its multidisciplinarity. Each laboratory develops high quality international research and leadership, but new innovative developments will stem from interdisciplinary. In the collaboration of nanoscience/functional materials researchers with structural materials and process researchers, in a multi-scale approach, projects will be developed for complex applications where materials have to insure both structural integrity under stringent conditions and one or several advanced functionalities. Indeed, in these fields, the research strategies, the investigation tools and equipment, the surface treatments are often similar. Moreover, whatever the material under study, its physical properties, its fabrication or transformation processes, a multi-scale approach is always needed with precise characterization and modeling. SEAM researchers will thus, for any device, system or application they will imagine, be able to &#034;choose&#034; a (nano)material, to choose a process to elaborate the adapted material, to &#034;define&#034; the characterization or modeling tools for the process involved and the (nano)material, and finally to &#034;test&#034; the device or system performance in which the nano material is integrated. How we will manage to undertake these projects is detailed in the scientific part. The scientific project includes 3 axes and several sub-axes. The first axis, &#034;electronic structure-based functional materials&#034; is related to many applications in electronics and photonics. The second one is related to &#034;structural materials&#034; and their mechanical properties. The third one &#034;modelling and characterization&#034; is transversal. The number of researchers from the SEAM laboratories implied in a given field is reported in the table below. Several technological platforms gathering experimental techniques will be used by the whole SEAM labex consortium.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The chosen steering way is project and performance driving. The coordinator, responsible towards universities, CNRS, PRES and partners, define the objectives, set up the budget, follow the Labex activities based on result indicators.&lt;/p&gt;

She graduated from Ecole des Mines, Nancy (1979), obtained a Master Eng. and PhD from McGill University in Canada (1986) and an HDR from P13 University (1995). She was awarded the Grand Prix Pechiney by the Acad&#233;mie des Sciences in 2000 and the Sainte-Claire Deville Medal by SF2M in 2009. Her research topics concern the experimental study and modeling of the links between the macroscopic anisotropy of the plastic behavior of polycrystalline materials and their microstructure state, mainly in relation to plasticity and recrystallization. Her scientific production includes 170 publications in peerreviewed journals (H factor = 26). She has assumed (co-)responsibility for 23 industrial collaboration contracts and 5 ANR or FUI research projects since 2000, she has been advisor and co-advisor of 31 PhD students and 9 postdocs and currently supervises 4 PhD students.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;img src='http://www.labex-seam.fr/local/cache-vignettes/L100xH144/christian_ricolleau_labex-ab992.jpg?1703292101' width='100' height='144' alt=&#034;&#034; /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Christian Ricolleau&lt;/strong&gt; (MeANS, MPQ, UP7) is professor at MPQ lab. He has a solid know-how in material science and he has well-recognized skills in electron microscopy. He developed a real expertise in the study of the growth, structural and thermodynamical properties in metal alloy nanoparticles and in specific and reliable electron microscopy technique for nanomaterial analysis. His research topics concern the order/disorder phase transformation in nanoalloys, the growth and structural properties of bi-metallic 18 nanostructures, HRTEM, quantitative and environmental electron microscopy. Since 2008, he directs the Nanoalloy GDR (CNRS 3182). He has been a member of the national CNRS committee of the 5th section in between 2008 and 2012. Between 2011 and 2013, he has been the president of the scientific council of CRMD. In 2014 he has been appointed member of the scientific council in Labex iMUST. His scientific production includes 83 publications in peer-reviewed journals (H factor = 29, 2700 citations), 11 publications in proceedings, 3 books (1 as associate editor), 3 book chapters, 4 patents, 90 national and international conference papers (26 invitations between 2006 and 2016).&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Francesco Amendola&lt;/strong&gt; (UP13), is engineer for valorization since 2017 for the Labex SEAM.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;They are assisted by a steering committee, and a scientific committee composed of internationally recognized experts, industrials and research group managers providing prospective analysis and scientific advices.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;p&gt; Some of the questions the SEAM project is addressing are the following:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;font color = gray &gt; Electronics &lt;/font color&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;How can we elaborate ultra pure/defect-free diamond single crystals for high power detectors or quantum information, or bipolar devices all in diamond for high power electronics? Scientists (LSMP) in the Labex are worldwide recognized in this field. Can we substitute silicon by organic materials down to the single molecule? Chemists from ITODYS and physicists from MPQ are gather their forces. New molecules, electronic transport across molecules and electrode/molecules interfaces are investigated. Carbon nanotubes are good candidates for molecular electronics. However, their electronic properties and doping are not well mastered yet. Several groups in the Labex (MPQ and LSMP) work together in order to produce advances in this field. In future electronic devices, can we use spin instead of charge as an external parameter? Spintronics was initiated by Albert FERT (French 2007 Physics Nobel Prize laureate). Multiferro&#239;cs could be materials for the future. We work to understand the coupling between magnetic and electric properties in these materials (ITODYS, MPQ). Can we go one step further in molecular electronics by combining spin and molecules? This is the objective of molecular spintronics. Interfaces between molecules and magnetic substrates, poorly understood, are studied jointly by chemists (ITODYS) and physicists (MPQ).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt; &lt;strong&gt;&lt;font color = gray &gt; Lasers &lt;/font color&gt; &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;How can we realize electrically pumped organic lasers? LPL is involved in OLED research to reduce losses occurring in electrodes that limit the current density in the organic materials below 1A/cm2. LSMP, next to LPL, will develop solutions. How can we master the quantum engineering of materials to design new light sources? Light sources in the wavelength domains of far infra-red (IR) or TeraHertz (THz) remain to be developed. Such sources which could be electrically controlled in their integrated semi-conducting version are still lacking. These domains are important for security, environment (detection of pollutants or explosives), telecommunications. The Labex has experts in quantum cascade lasers (Carlo Sirtori at MPQ is a co-inventor of QCLs).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt; &lt;strong&gt;&lt;font color = gray &gt; Magnetism &lt;/font color&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;How can we increase the high density of magnetic storage together with a reduction of energy consumption inside computers? Nanomagnetism and the overcome of the super paramagnetic limit can lead to the ultimate objective of one bit/one single magnetic particule. The mechanisms of magnetization reversal in small nano-dots remain to be understood and new materials with high magnetic anisotropy energy have to be found. This is adressed by groups at MPQ, ITODYS and lspm.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;font color = gray &gt; Structural materials &lt;/font color&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;How can we enhance the mechanical properties of materials by optimizing their composition, microstructure and their architecture? Industrial applications in structural materials (LSPM) concerns transportation, aeronautics, energy and civil engineering. &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
Smart and functional materials &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
How can we develop new advanced materials such as foams, metallic glasses, nanostructured or meta multi materials for which the structural function is not the single desired one? This will lead to applications in microelectronics and biomaterials. This is addressed by LSPM in collaboration with MSC and ITODYS. How to bring new properties to materials by functionalization ? Functional and/or nanostructured materials are required in several technologically important areas. We develop new approaches and new applications ranging from magnetic, medical, environmental applications to renewable energy sources and smart materials (MSC, MPS, ITODYS).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

The SEAM consortium is composed of 350 persons including 165 professors and researchers, more than 105 PhD and post-docs coming from all over the world. Internationally recognized research teams and advanced facilities allow conducting high level research.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;justify&gt; La 1&lt;sup&gt;&#232;re&lt;/sup&gt; session fut consacr&#233;e &#224; des pr&#233;sentations invit&#233;es (HEA et traitement de surface) et d'un bilan et prospectives de la plateforme salle blanche &#224; Paris Nord. Les 2&lt;sup&gt;&#232;me&lt;/sup&gt; et 3&lt;sup&gt;&#232;me&lt;/sup&gt; sessions rassemblant des pr&#233;sentations sur les projets en cours.&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;Nous constatons d'ann&#233;e en ann&#233;e, un nombre croissant de participants, ce qui atteste d'une meilleure visibilit&#233; du LABEX dans nos laboratoires. Cependant, nous avons d&#233;plor&#233; que bon nombre de participants se soient inscrits &#224; la derni&#232;re minute (voire le jour m&#234;me), entra&#238;nant ainsi quelques soucis de logistique. Nous comptons sur la bonne volont&#233; de chacun pour cela ne se reproduise pas dans les ann&#233;es &#224; venir, afin de nous permettre d'organiser des &#233;v&#232;nements scientifiques SEAM toujours plus r&#233;ussis&lt;/i&gt;. &lt;/justify&gt; &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The laboratory is composed of 7 teams ...&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt; Development of plasma processes for very high purity / high crystalline structure diamond growth, surface treatment and material synthesis;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Elaboration of inorganic and / or hybrid functional nanoparticles by sol-gel processes, with applications in the field of photonic and catalysis ;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Thermodynamic modeling of high pressure processes;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Investigation of plasma-surface interaction for tokamak edge plasma conditions (team not involved in the SEAM Labex) ;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Relationships between microstructural characteristics of materials and their physical-mechanical properties or behaviour under loading conditions. &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;font color = orange&gt; &lt;strong&gt;1. Functional materials&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/font color&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Very high purity diamond single crystal growth / plasma reactors conception. Some recent major results can be highlighted :&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;

&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt; Development for the first time of a growth model, validated experimentally, that allows to predict the crystal morphology, for a given thickness, as a function of the growth conditions;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Pre-treatment and growth strategies that enable avoiding fracture and dislocation emergence during diamond growth, key point for growing thick crystals,&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Progress in the reduction of the defects such as dislocations. This is still a bottleneck to overcome for developing power electronic switches, hole mobility as high as 1820 cm2/V s obtained on a low p doped (1.6 1015 at. cm-3) diamond crystal (top level international position).&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; New plasma process conception and reactor scale-up in order to improve significantly the growth process (uniformity and enlargement of the deposition surface), confirming the group top level position at the international level for both diamond deposition and plasma processes.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Metal-oxide nanoparticle elaboration and metal-oxide nanoparticle application.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Development of a soft chemistry process that makes possible the in-situ homogeneous p-type and n-type doping of metal-oxide nanoparticles with a very narrow size distribution.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Deposition of doped metal-oxide nanoparticles with an improved absorption in the visible.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; A major scientific achievement in bridging the gap between the mixing dynamic that characterize the elaboration process and the obtained nanoparticle size distribution. This required conducting a multidisciplinary research.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; Demonstration of the potentiality of the elaborated materials in fields such as photonics, plasma-catalysis and photo-catalysis.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; The study of electric-magnetic, magnetic-elastic, piezo-electric, optical properties extends over an open variety of compounds, in bulk and in (mono- or multi-) layered aspect, which are being given a controlled nano-structure. Models for micro-magnetic excitations in nanoscaled structures are being developed with special attention to the dimension reduction effects. For optic and acoustic investigations, Brillouin spectroscopy is among the techniques of which the laboratory has expertise and mastership, with the development of numerical simulations for the Brillouin spectra. &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;font color = orange&gt; &lt;strong&gt;2. Structural Materials&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/font color&gt;&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;

Associating the activities of mechanists, metallurgists, chemists and physicists, are investigated all the steps along the elaboration/transformation - characterization/identification - modelling/simulation chain of materials. This diversity of disciplinary fields allows obtaining realistic descriptions of the overall material behaviour under applied or suffered loads, from the identified responsible elementary mechanisms and from the spatial organization of the constitutive elements. The activities concern both structure and functional materials with dominant mechanical investigations for the former ones (plasticity, damage and fracture) and dominant physical and chemical considerations for the latter ones (magnetism, optics, conductivity, thermodynamic stability, activity,...) but also crossed examinations of, possibly coupled, mechanical and physico-chemical properties. Studies of mechanical properties are mainly concerned with metallic materials (steel, aluminium alloys,...), metal-based composites (as metal-oxide compounds), compounds), with extensions to materials with particular architectures (involving closed or open porous phase or resulting from controlled - compacted or layer deposited - multi-phase assemblages for example). Elasticity, plasticity (up to large deformations), damage and fracture, but also recrystallization and microstructural transformations are the mainly investigated properties . Metal forming of flat products, growth and study of metallic single and multi- crystals (Cu, Al, Fe, Zr), measures and estimates of internal stresses in heterogeneous structures are recognized skills of the laboratory, as more recently the study of new (as ultra hard BCNx) compounds obtained under high pressure conditions, or materials obtained from chemical synthesis in (metallic, oxide, salt of hybrid) powder state. The shear loading test is one of the specials of the laboratory. Ultra finely grained metals and metal matrix composites obtained either by powder compaction techniques or by severe plastic deformation also is an axis of recognized expertise of the laboratory.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The increasing involvement of LSPM in the study and the modeling of finely structured materials, with complex architectures, towards the accounting of specific effects related to small dimensions, has led to develop nano-characterization in microscopy (electronic and atomic) and in diffractometry. Particularly involved in the study of a load on the physical properties of materials, LSPM has varied its means for examining loaded materials in situ of microscopy, diffraction, spectroscopy etc,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For which it conceives the testing micro-machines for tension, compression, bending and shear loading. Some of these machines can be operational on various devices, allowing multi-physic characterizations. Special machines for shear under high pressure between diamond anvil cells also are prototypically developed specialties. &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;font color = orange&gt; &lt;strong&gt;3. Processes and characterization tools&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/font color&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;LSPM possesses a large platform of elaboration processes allowing fabrication of a wide range of materials from single crystals to nanocrystals: sol gel, laser induced nucleation, CVD, plasma, .... In order to perform diagnostics of plasmas or of nucleation processes, LSPM have a Laser platform, being partly shared with LPL. An UV to visible Laser for plasma diagnostics together with a Labram spectrometer complete this Laser platform. LSPM has a structural characterization platform including X-Ray diffractometers, TEM, AFM, SEM. In addition, some specific equipments such as electronic conductivity and diamond view set-up. Unique facilities also exist that make possible the elaboration of nanostructured bulk materials such as ductile (super-plastic) material by processing copper nanoparticles under under high pressure and low temperature, crystal growth Bridgman and strain annealed methods and two Hot Isostatic Pressing devices, together with mechanical testing (2 shear testing devices, standard tensile and compressive testing, microindentor, image acquisition and analysis device for measures of kinematic fields),one symmetric and one non symmetric rolling devices. Means and equipments dedicated to specific studies are the Brillouin diffusion, high pressure (belt and multi-anvil) presses, the interferometry lasers and power lasers, ATDATG and equipments for chemical synthesis. Means for calculations and image analyses are available as well. &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
